About BFSU
Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is a prestigious university in China and under the direct management of the State Ministry of Education. As the first foreign language university and offering the most language programs in the country, it excels in the teaching and studying of foreign languages, foreign literature, overseas sinology, and also serves as an important base producing quality professionals with language competence and global vision.
Founded in 1941, the BFSU was known as Yan'an College of Foreign Languages, which was reorganized based on the Department of Russian at Campus Three of China Anti-Japanese Military and Political University. It was renamed Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1949 when the People’s Republic of Chinawas founded and incorporated with Beijing Russian Institute in 1959. The university got its current name in 1994 with the approval of the State Ministry of Education.
Offering both degree and other education programs, the BFSU is one of the first “Project 211” universities, a national project initiated in1995 by the Ministry of Education with the aim of cultivating 100 key collegesfor the 21st century. It was listed in 2011 as one of the “Project 985” colleges with innovation platforms based on outstanding academic subjects.
International exchange and cooperation has always been a distinct feature of Beijing Foreign Studies University since its founding. It admits 1,000 international students from 60 countries and sends hundreds of Chinese students to study at dozens of foreign colleges every year. Besides, the BFSU opened 17 overseas Confucius Institutes, ranking the first among Chinese universities and colleges.
